Hair Removal & Chemical Peels

I’m finishing up my first “block” of class so we’ve had a lot of tests and practicals making sure we have the skills to move on to the next block.

One of the skills we learned about and worked on is waxing. I was looking forward to doing this the whole time and I loved it as much as I thought I would. Waxing is so quick and has immediate satisfaction for the client. About five years ago I had a ton of laser hair removal (now called laser hair reduction) done and it didn’t last at all for me. I’ve only met a handful of people who had laser hair reduction and were generally satisfied with the results.

Some hair removal myths that I learned the truth about:

  • Shaving or waxing facial hair or any hair makes it grow in thicker. FALSE. The hair in your follicle won’t change based on removal of it.
  • If you shave or wax your arms or a new body part, you’ll have to keep doing it. FALSE. Since the hair doesn’t change, you can let it grow back out and it will look the same as it did before.
  • If you wax, your skin will for sure feel smooth for longer than shaving. FALSE. Your hair has many growth cycles. Once you get the cycles under a good waxing schedule, it WILL feel smooth longer, but you could wax and have a new cycle coming in that won’t get lifted with wax making your skin feel a little prickly. For me, it took only a couple months of waxing the same area for my skin to feel super smooth and to be hairless for at least a couple of months.

Another thing we learned about was add-on masks called collagen fleece or alginate masks. These masks cover your whole face including your eyes and lips and have many benefits for the skin depending on what type of serum (ampule) and mask you use. The alginate mask looks like this (below) and was really cool and my skin felt really smooth afterward. It literally hardens into a rubber texture and is rolled off of your face.

This weekend we got to experience a chemical peel. Everyone’s initial thought was that we were going to look like Samantha from Sex and the City…

BUT, that’s so not true. There are so many different types and grades of chemical peels that can be done. Some are even so strong that they have to be done by a doctor and you have to be sedated. We obviously didn’t do one like that. For me, it felt totally fine on my face, just a little itchy. For others in the class, the sensation was much tougher to tough-out for five-ten minutes. Some benefits of chemical peels (depending on the type) are:

  • Faster cellular turnover
  • Stimulation of collagen and elastin
  • Decreases inflammation
  • Enhances immune system
  • Acne help
  • Skin lightening and brightening

…and much more. I’d definitely recommend getting one.
